Image
In a deal that was inked before Hurricane Dorian, Carnival Cruises came to an Agreement to develop a private-island like experience for cruise passengers. This port, because of its proximity to New York, will definitely be added to New York Itineraries when completed. Available details are below.

Carnival Cruise Lines has agreed a deal to build a $100 million cruise port in Grand Bahama, according to Bahamas Prime Minister Hubert Minnis.

Minnis made the announcement on Friday at a youth convention, saying, “I am pleased to announce that after many months of negotiations, we have delivered … a massive project for the people of Grand Bahama …. the Carnival port development is going full steam ahead.”
He said the government would provide more details of the deal in upcoming days.

A spokesman for Carnival confirmed to the Compass that an agreement has been reached.

Carnival Sunrise Cancels Bermuda Call - Violates the Jones Act.

Image
Carnival Cruises' Carnival Sunrise departed from Charleston, SC as planned headed for Bermuda on Wednesday 9/18/2019. The plan was for the ship to sail to Bermuda behind Hurricane Humberto keeping her passengers safe from the wrath of the storm. Unfortunately the impacts of hurricane Humberto were still lingering and after a day at sea en-route and heavy seas, the decision was made to eliminate the call in Bermuda and to seek calmer waters. Waves in excess of 18 feet were reported. In addition, the hurricane knocked out power to a significant part of Bermuda and Carnival also determined that passenger may have a less than ideal experience even if they were able to reach the island.

The Carnival Sunrise departed New York this past Monday on what was to be a 6 day cruise to Bermuda. Because of the storm, the call in Charleston was added and the ship was expected to then call in Bermuda. Hurricane Humberto had different plans.

At this point, the Carnival Sunrise is heading back to N…

Grand Bahama Shipyard Re-Opens For Operation After Hurricane Dorian.

Image
Grand Bahamas Shipyard is the major shipyard capable of refits and major renovations for the cruise line industry. Its proximity to Florida and short trip from the northeast and Gulf of Mexico, makes it strategically located and  helps to reduce the time required for a refit.

Grand Bahama Shipyard (GBS) reports that it has officially resumed operations, welcoming back its first commercial vessel, the 57,062-ton Agathonissos. Owned by Greece-based Eletson, it returned to the shipyard yesterday to complete repair work that began before Hurricane Dorian hit the Bahamas.
The shipyard, located in Freeport, Grand Bahama, says it remains on track for the next planned cruise ship visit, Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Ecstasy, scheduled to arrive on October 5.

Grand Bahama Shipyard says damage it incurred in the storm was limited primarily to some erosion, with no effect on berths. The shipyard is able to fully power its core operations, including docks, workshops and administrative…

Featured Cruise - Small Ship Cruise Line - Blount Adventure Cruises Hudson River, Erie Canal and St. Lawrence Cruises.

DIFFERENT BY DESIGN

Cruise Under the Lowest Bridges Blount Small Ships have been built with the purpose of bringing travelers to places that larger ships simply cannot go, with patented designs that allow our ships to slip, with inches to spare, under the lowest bridges on a canal, and fit through tight transit locks. It was all thanks to Luther’s invention — the Retractable Pilot House.
Perhaps his most amazing feat was the shallowness of his ships' draft. The draft refers to how far below the waterline the lowest part of a ship is. Amazingly, after years of perfecting his designs, all of the ships in our fleet have drafts of less than seven feet.

A Cruise - Next Port of Call - Long Island NY

Image
Due to Hurricane Dorian, cruise lines still continue to modify itineraries and make adjustments.

Royal Caribbean announced a change to the Adventure of the Seas September 6th New England / Canada cruise. It was announced that the cruise would drop a call at Bar Harbor and instead spend an additional day at sea. Little did anyone know the day at seas was going to be spent in position off of Long Island's Long Beach. In view of the shore and the Veranzaro Narrows Bridge, the Adventure of the Seas spent a good part of the day at an anchorage with oil tankers and container ships, allowing Dorian to make her way up the US East Coast.  Here is the timeline....

The Adventure of the Seas arrived in New York on 9/6 (Friday). Loaded passengers, she sailed at 6 PM. By 7:15 PM she took up her anchorage position and remained off the Long Island Shore until Saturday at 12:15 PM when she turned to the sea and proceeded to Portland ME.

Grand Bahama and Abaco Islands Greatly Damaged by Dorian - Cruise Lines Evaluate Private Islands.

Image
After greatly damaging Grand Bahama Island and the Abaco Islands, Hurricane Dorian is making its way slowly up the east coast of the United States.

Based on the reported damage to Grand Bahama Island and the Abaco Islands, it may be years before life return to normal. With the significant damage and loss of life,  the island has a long path to rebuild.

Many cruise lines have donated relief money including Carnival, Disney Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean. There was also a sizeable donation from the Arison family (founders of Carnival Cruises empire).

The Bahamas is an important port of call for cruise lines, only being 90 miles from Miami and a frequent call on 3 and 4 day cruises from Florida.

Many cruise lines have their private islands in the Bahamas and those islands are being evaluated for damage after Dorian's wrath.

Royal Caribbean has posted the following to their website......
We closed CocoCay on Wednesday, August 28th, 2019, and had originally pl…
