Cruise Ships in the Northeast Avoid Strong Storms

Today (Wednesday) 11/20/2019 Royal Caribbean's Anthem of the Seas is headed back to New York after spending the day in Coco Cay in the Bahamas. The Anthem is sailing on an 8 Day cruise which only visited the private island.

A strong storm has wreaked havoc on the northeast US causing cruise passengers and cruise lines scrambling for a path forward.
A strong nor’easter has come up the
coast of the United States stranding ships departing from New York and
Baltimore in port. The storm was situated between their departure port
and their desired destination of Florida and the Bahamas.
Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas was supposed to depart Cape
Liberty on Saturday 11/16/2019 but remained in port until Monday morning
at about 10:30 AM.
Originally passengers were told the ship would depart Cape Liberty Saturday and remain anchored in lower New York Bay until the storm passed. Passengers were later told that the ship would remain in the port. The cruise was changed to a New York to Bermuda sailing (with the ship spending 1 night in Bermuda and departing on Monday) – passengers were also offered a full refund if they decided not to sail– supposedly approximately 1,000 people took this option. For those opting to stay for the cruise, Royal Caribbean offered shuttle buses to Manhattan.

Late Sunday night/early Monday
morning, the Anthem’s destination was changed and Bermuda was dropped
and replaced with CoCo Cay – Royal Caribbean’s private island. Bermuda
was dropped over concern of rough seas. The Anthem of the Seas
departed from New York at 10:30 AM Monday heading south and is expected
to dock at CoCo Cay on Wednesday - November 20th at 7:00 AM.
Out of Baltimore Royal Caribbean’s
Grandeur of the Seas departed from the cruise terminal and remained
anchored off of Romancoke Maryland in the Chesapeake Bay from Saturday
evening until 10:30 PM Sunday night.
The Grandeur of the Seas continued on her planned itinerary visiting Port Canaveral, Nassau and CoCo Cay Bahamas.
Coming up the coast, behind the storm
was Carnival Cruises’ Carnival Pride – which arrived in Baltimore one
day late as she slowly made her way northward hugging the coast.
Passengers reported rough seas on Sunday night.
Crew on a tanker which sailed through
the storm reported 25+ foot waves and 60 knot winds off the Carolinas.
Sounds like waiting out the storm was the right decision.
