The SS JOHN W. BROWN is steaming up to New York to celebrate her close connection with this fantastic city. In 1946 when many Liberty Ships were being scrapped or sold the SS JOHN W. BROWN was loaned by the Maritime Commission to the New York City Board of Education for use as a floating vocational high school teaching the maritime trades. It would fill the role as the only floating nautical high school in the US for 35 years, moored first at an East River pier and later a Hudson River pier. The ship did not get underway but students operated ship's equipment and machinery.  Thousands of students went to school on the SS JOHN W. BROWN and many remain active volunteer crew members to this day.
