Carnival Cruises Carnival Sunrise Adjusts Itinerary A Second Time Dropping Call in Bermuda

Carnival Cruises' Carnival Sunrise departed from Charleston, SC as planned headed for Bermuda on Wednesday 9/18/2019. The plan was for the ship to sail to Bermuda behind Hurricane Humberto keeping her passengers safe from the wrath of the storm. Unfortunately the impacts of hurricane Humberto were still lingering and after a day at sea en-route and heavy seas, the decision was made to eliminate the call in Bermuda and to seek calmer waters. Waves in excess of 18 feet were reported. In addition, the hurricane knocked out power to a significant part of Bermuda and Carnival also determined that passenger may have a less than ideal experience even if they were able to reach the island.

The Carnival Sunrise departed New York this past Monday on what was to be a 6 day cruise to Bermuda. Because of the storm, the call in Charleston was added and the ship was expected to then call in Bermuda. Hurricane Humberto had different plans.

At this point, the Carnival Sunrise is heading back to New York and expected back in the port on 9/22/2019.

It is unclear if Carnival will be fined for being in violation of the Jones Act which states that foreign registered ships MUST call at at least 1 foreign port before returning to the US.  Only time will tell if the US Government will make an exception.

Carnival has offered passengers a 100% credit toward a future cruise as compensation for the inconvenience.

Remembering United States Lines S/S United States' Maiden Voyage.

RXR Reality's Artists Rendering of the S/S United States after it is jubilantly restored. Today marks the 68th anniversary of the maiden voyage of the SS United States of United States lines. The ship left New York on July 3, 1952 with a full complement of passengers. The ship broke the prior speed record for the transatlantic crossing taking the blue ribbon away from the queen Mary. Yes if United States was the fastest    ship to ever cross the Atlantic at 35.92 knots. The SS United States remained in service until 1969 at which time she was laid up. Numerous plans to reactivate the ship never materialized and the ship has remained idle and stripped of her interiors.  To date, the 55,330 GRT, SS United States is the largest passenger ship to be built entirely in the US. She was built in 1950 into 51 at a cost of over $79 million at the Newport News shipbuilding and drydock company. Measuring 990 feet long, 101 1/2 feet wide and a draft of 31 feet the ship
